What does it mean to have peace with God?
The constant, low-grade anxiety that you aren't doing enough to make God happy is shattered by the gospel. (That's also why good deeds can't get you to heaven - peace with God is a gift.)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

The Apostle John gives us a sobering test to evaluate whether our relationship with God is an authentic reality or a comfortable delusion:
And this is how we know [daily, by experience] that we have come to know Him [to understand Him and be more deeply acquainted with Him]: if we habitually keep [focused on His precepts and obey] His commandments (teachings).
Whoever says, 'I have come to know Him,' but does not habitually keep [focused on His precepts and obey] His commandments (teachings), is a liar, and the truth [of the divine word] is not in him.
